The Alamo Heights ISD Board of Trustees, with the guidance of search consultant, Dr. John Horn, conducted four face-to-face sessions during the last week of March, as part of the process for developing a profile for the next superintendent.

Horn met with board members, administrators, teachers and community members in separate sessions to discuss the search process, field questions, and receive important input. Paper survey forms were provided to those attending. The district also shared the surveys online in English and Spanish, to collect input which the Board can consider when building the profile to assess candidates.

Reflecting on the meetings, Horn noted, “I have led or assisted in over 100 superintendent searches. What I have witnessed here is a first. I have never experienced this degree of clarity of purpose and values, nor such a deeply shared commitment to an engagement culture.” Horn further shared, “The Board hopes to minimize the potential disruption that a search process and a change in superintendents can have on the continued journey of improvement in the district. Each member is committed to employing exactly the right leader who can provide the administrative leadership to take the district forward to even greater levels of success.”

The surveys have now closed and the work of compiling the responses has begun. The profile report is expected to be completed by mid-April.  Once the report is completed, then the Board will use it to reach consensus on priorities and other preferences it deems important.

Internal candidates should notify the search consultant of their interest in applying by April 13. He will provide instructions for applying. Applications are confidential and will be reviewed by the Board and considered for interview. If no internal candidates notify the consultant of interest, then external recruitment will begin immediately.

Dr. Horn can be reached at 972-965-7501, or johnhorn5@icloud.com.

After the internal interview(s), if a candidate meets all expectations generated in the profiles, and the Board is totally confident that the candidate can provide the extraordinary leadership needed, the Board will name that person as the lone finalist.  Otherwise, the Board will then ask the search consultant to recruit external candidates using the profiles as a guide.

The Board expects to name a final candidate so that the new superintendent can begin on or about July 1st.  The typical search process requires 90-120 days.
