Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) FAQ

As Alamo Heights ISD continues to monitor the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), we know there are a lot of questions surrounding the impact of this respiratory disease.  AHISD wants to keep our parents and community informed as we work closely with local health officials, the Texas Education Agency, and the Centers for Disease Control and Preventions (CDC).  We will update the FAQ as needed.

How long will classes in AHISD be cancelled?
At this time, AHISD has cancelled classed through April 3, 2020.  We continue to monitor the situation closely and remain in communication with local health authorities.  Any decision on future plans will be announced via our website and social media channels.

Are students being counted absent during this closure?
No, students are not being marked absent.

Will we have to make up days?
At this time, we do not anticipate a change in our calendar.  The reason this situation is different from a typical closure, is that the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has indicated that if we continue to support our students instructionally during the time we're closed, we will receive credit for those days.

How will instruction be provided to students during this cancellation?
AHISD is committed to providing high-quality continuous learning opportunities for our students.  Academic deans have placed instructional links on our website.  These resources can be found at AHISD Continuous Learning.

What if students need materials, devices or books?
We will work with staff to plan times for pick-up of materials outside of our campuses.  For any family who might experience a challenge getting to school to pick up materials, we will work with transportation for bus route deliveries.  Parents will hear from teachers once we determine the need.

What is the status State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) test?
On March 16, 2020, Governor Greg Abbott announced that he has waived the STAAR testing requirements for the 2019-2020 school year in response to the events surrounding COVID-19. As a result, the STAAR and STAAR Alt 2 assessments will not be administered in AHISD this year.

What about extracurricular activities?
If we are not opening our buildings to offer academic services, we will not be hosting or supporting extracurriculars.  While our schools are closed, our extracurriculars will be cancelled/postponed.  We received UIL guidance that all UIL activities will be cancelled until the end of March.  While we are closed, all facilities will remain closed to students.

Will student on free/reduced get meals?
Yes.  Our Child Nutrition Department will be providing free meals on a daily basis to students in a drive-thru pick-up location in the back of Alamo Heights Junior School.

What about Balloonfest, Festival of Learning, prom and other planned events?
We will absolutely look at rescheduling events (banquets, prom, etc.) that fall within our window of closure, but while we are closed, we will not host any events or large crowds.

Will AHISD employees still get paid?
Yes.  Our Board of Trustees will be considering a resolution to continue to pay all staff during this closure.  *This will be different  than a snow-day kind of closure, where we have minutes of instruction and 187 contract days for teachers to serve.  In order to pay employees, we will need to ask everyone to work in some sort of capacity.
