Instructional Continuity Moving Into 20-21 School Year

The need to close our school facilities for the last Nine Weeks of the year had a profound impact on our families, teachers, students, and instruction. Our Continuous Learning Plan was ambitious, and through community-wide efforts, we kept teachers teaching and students learning so that our AHISD students would not fall behind.

We are developing a two-prong approach to addressing any instructional gaps that result from facilities closure.

1. We are addressing Opportunity Gaps that impact all students.

Teachers are being asked to complete an After-Action Review to document curriculum standards that need additional reinforcement in the coming year.  We are adding time to review and reinforce these standards in our curriculum plans for next year.

Additionally, teachers are developing Summer Learning Resources. From our AHISD webpage, parents and students will be able to access a list of curated resources and practice for essential skills for each grade level and subject. This will allow students to both review and practice skills from this past year and also to preview essential skills for the upcoming year.

Finally, the district is considering adding additional days to the end of the 2020-2021 school calendar to allow for needed additional instructional time to address lingering opportunity gaps resultant from facilities closure.

2. We are addressing Learning Gaps that impact individual students.

We are planning Summer Intersession services for students with demonstrated academic gaps, to include Extended School Year for students served through special education, pending the approval to re-open our facilities in July. We are hopeful that by postponing original plans for June support to later in the summer, the possibility of offering small face -to -face support might become a possibility. Summer Intersession and Extended School Year services may be through face-to-face or distance instruction, depending on local health guidance and government directives.

At the beginning of the 2020 school year, there will be a heightened importance placed on beginning of the year academic screenings. We anticipate additional students will need short-term academic support through our Response to Intervention (RtI) programming.

ARD committees will make individual decisions about additional needed services for students served through special education.
