Credit-by-Examination Without Prior Instruction (for acceleration) is administered for the purpose of acceleration and designed to address the needs of the following:
- Students in Kindergarten through 5th grade who desire to “skip” a grade. Students who are the best candidates for acceleration excel in language arts/reading, mathematics, science, and social studies and are physically and emotionally mature for their ages.
- Students in grade 6-12 who are highly knowledgeable in the essential knowledge and skills of one or more subject and who are capable of “skipping” the subject. Secondary students shall not have had prior instruction in the subject.**
For one subject:
Credit by examination without prior instruction requires a score of at least 80 percent on the exam to earn credit. (EHDC Legal)**
For skipping an entire grade level:
The student must score at least an 80 percent on each of the four content area exams, which includes: language arts/reading, mathematics, science, and social studies, in order to “skip” the grade level. (EHDC Legal)**
Limitations on taking examinations:
A student may not attempt more than two times to receive credit for a particular subject on the basis of an examination for credit in that subject.
If a student fails to achieve the designated score on an applicable examination for a subject before the beginning of the school year in which the student would ordinarily be required to enroll in a course in that subject in accordance with the Districtís prescribed course sequence, the student must satisfactorily complete the course to receive credit for the course. (EHDC Legal)
** The following tests are not available for acceleration: Algebra I, Biology, English I, English II, and U.S. History. TEA recently instituted a new policy for exams for acceleration under 19 TAC Chapter 74 Curriculum Requirements, Subchapter C, Other Provisions, §74.24. The Algebra 1, Biology, English 1, English 2, and United States History exams for acceleration (credit by exams without prior instruction) must have been validated to meet the rigor of the end of course exams. For more information about this policy change, please visit: http://ritter.tea.state.tx.us/rules/tac/chapter074/ch074c.html#74.24.
